Deliberadamente, não será mencionada a palavra “ viagem”. 

O primeiro plano é executado de costas. O cenário é um café vazio. As personagens são três: o sonhador, o realista infeliz e o barista. O barista apenas serve bebidas e está ausente a maior parte do tempo. Os copos enchidos pelo barista com liquido acastanhado são bolas de ping pong do discurso. Cada jogador, mostra o seu jogo com recurso ao barulho que cada copo faz ao bater no balcão depois de o liquido ter sido emborcado. A cena é construída por quatro planos em sucessão rítmica, rápida e melódica: o de costas, o de frente e dois a três quartos (um de cada lado).

Brauun apela ao espírito aventureiro do ser humano para convencer o jovem encenador a desistir do seu emprego e a juntar-se a ele, no circo. Promete-lhe, em troca da possibilidade de desgraça, decadência e miséria, liberdade.

Esta conversa fala-me daquele momento de vida em que se sente o precipício, uma possível mudança drástica de velocidade ou direção da montanha russa. De fora fica a possibilidade de não fazer nada. Há sempre uma escolha a tomar e isso assusta. “É o fim!” – diz o consciente descontrolado a si mesmo com todo o dramatismo de novela de horário nobre. Mas as nuances da questão são, sem equivoco, um interessante assunto sobre a qual refletir uma vez entrarem na dimensão delicada e sensível do desconhecido. Constantemente dou por mim a escrever sobre ele, quiçá na esperança que chegue a uma conclusão ou então, porque apenas gosto de me enrolar no abstrato. Sei que lido com ele de forma espantosa num cocktail de fascínio desmesurado e medo irrefletido. Há que desconstruir! Aos atores em palco pela primeira vez, costuma-se dizer “imagina toda a gente nua”. Criar imagens ridículas ou divertidas do que nos assombra tende a ajudar a digerir o assunto. Pois bem, comecemos.

A conversa entre Braun e Phillip é nada mais nada menos que a discussão interna constante entre os dois peluches caqui que comandam a área específica do nosso cérebro responsável pelo processamento do verbo agir e dos seus quês. Um chama-se Conforto e o outro Aventura.

O Conforto é terrível. Tem tom amarelado, cabeça triangular de ângulos arredondados e um corpo tão circular que pouco se vê os braços e as pernas estreitas. Usa galochas vermelhas impecáveis que parecem nunca se gastarem. É muito perspicaz a recolher e listar todas as coisas e coisinhas que podem correr mal assim que um pé saia da sua bolha. A lista tende a crescer descontroladamente à medida que vou pensando mais afincadamente no ato de partir. É dual e brutalmente inflexível pois categoriza como boas todas as coisas dentro da bolha e como horríveis qualquer coisa fora. Crê que a razão lhe pertence. Ficou pior desde que a infância decidiu ir-se embora.

A Aventura é uma gigante dócil e envergonhada. Lilás. Tem costas larguíssimas e braços e pernas gelatinosos. Onde se esperaria ver pescoço, está a cabeça grande e amigável. Tatuagem acima do rabo de um traço a lápis de cera verde escuro. Ao contrário do Conforto, não vive do realismo murphyniano mas sim do sonho e alimenta-se do que ainda não se sabe com uma pitada do que se ouve dizer. Quando a Infância ainda por cá andava, os dias da Aventura eram passados num grande descampado de relva curta de onde, deitada, olhava para o céu. Via nas nuvens imagens desconectadas do seu imaginário fértil e colorido. Um dos seus aspetos peculiares é que vai variando de tamanho ao longo do tempo, podendo não só crescer como decrescer. Há quem diga que diminui de tamanho à medida que envelhecemos, mas não é certo. Há uns anos, um grupo de cientistas defendeu uma correspondência direta inversa entre o aumento de tamanho do Conforto e o decréscimo proporcional do tamanho da Aventura. Como não é patologia o engordar desproporcionado do Conforto, a esta premissa não se deu mais importância que a uma rajada de vento em plena tempestade.

O Conforto é sobre o eu, todo ele. Afinal é uma lista de todas as coisas que me agarra aqui e todos os medos que me assombrarão caso decida partir. Mas a Aventura é sobre o futuro. É a vontade de encontrar do outro lado parte do fruto da imaginação, completada por outra parte de uma realidade inimaginável. É, em suma, a esperança de encontrar do outro lado uma melhor versão de mim mesmo. Por isso, é de recear o dia em que deixe de ver a Aventura na relva.

É o equilíbrio delicado entre Conforto e Aventura que torna o desconhecido uma tentação tão apetecível e esta é um sentimento de liberdade de tal forma que a sua inexistência é sinal que a juventude passou por mim e que permaneço agora rígido e velho num corpo que ainda agora nasceu.

Recentemente, senti isto, cada palavra, e assustei-me. No último ano, vi o conforto aconchegar-me e colocar-me em estado adormecido. Vi-o acionar o piloto automático e conduzir-me pelo mar da constância e regularidade preenchida só e apenas por certezas. Assustei-me. Não as quero.

Ter certezas é meio caminho andado para deixar de fazer perguntas e ter só certezas é sinal de as termos deixado de fazer há muito. Sentir que nunca saberei tudo é conforto e a procura propósito. E o conhecimento não se obtém só de livros e lições de escola. É também experiência. Tocar na água fria do Atlântico e na mais quente do Mediterrâneo. Sentir a força dos ventos do Norte e as brisas do Sul. Na infância, quando o meu abecedário tinha mais de 26 letras e eu pouco me expressava por palavras, passava os meus dias num quadrado de terra de três metros de lado à sombra de uma grande magnoreira*. Este espaço foi um dos grandes professores da minha vida. Às vezes esqueço-me… e por isso fiz a mala.

Estes pensamentos são de solidão. Tenho-os comigo e a decisão de partir é invariavelmente egoísta mas necessária. Afinal, como poderei dar o melhor de mim àqueles que me rodeiam, que merecem tudo, se me recostei num cantinho quente e escuro e por lá fiquei, pálido. Nada mais tenho a acrescentar.

Este não é, contudo, um atentado ao Conforto, apenas à sua tendência nariguda de crescer e asfixiar. Mas quando vamos, quando partimos em direção ao desconhecido, dependendo de algo além de nós, e pomos muita da decisão no acaso e nas incompreensíveis e incontestáveis leis do Universo, a nossa bolha torna-se tudo. É casa.

Em caminho, o pouco que temos é o nosso conforto e, por isso, este pouco diz muito de cada um. Em “Arte da Viagem”, Paul Theraux, faz uma compilação dos viajantes que mais estima e das suas bagagens; das suas bolhas de conforto. Alguns levam livros, outros amuletos. Também existem casos de ferramentas e/ou uns quantos canivetes. Sobre Graham Greene, na sua caminhada pela Libéria em 1935, escreve:

“Têm vinte e seis carregadores africanos mal pagos
para transportar a comida e o equipamento. Têm uma pistola, têm uma tenda
(que nunca será usada), têm uma mesa, uma casa de banho portátil e um
aprovisionamento de whisky.”

Lembro-me de uma Berlim fria e deserta, despida de habitantes pela pandemia vigente (em 2021), e de um nevão gélido num dia de março. Um dia, comprei uma chávena para o café da manhã, uma almofada esvaziada e uma pequena manta preta. E tudo mudou. A neve desapareceu.

Deliberately, the word ‘ travel’ will not be mentioned.

The first shot is from the back. The setting is an empty café. There are three characters: the dreamer, the unhappy realist and the barista. The barista only serves drinks and is absent most of the time. The glasses filled by the barista with brownish liquid are ping pong balls of discourse. Each player demonstrates their game using the noise each glass makes when it hits the counter after the liquid has been drunk. The scene is constructed of four shots in rhythmic, rapid and melodic succession: the back, the front and two to three quarters (one on each side).

Brauun appeals to the adventurous spirit of the human being to convince the young director to give up his job and join him in the circus. In exchange for the possibility of disgrace, decadence and misery, he promises him freedom.

This conversation speaks to me of that moment in life when you feel the precipice, a possible drastic change of speed or direction on the rollercoaster. On the outside is the possibility of doing nothing. There’s always a choice to be made and that scares you. ‘It’s the end!’ – says the uncontrolled conscious to itself with all the drama of a prime-time soap opera. But the nuances of the question are, without equivocation, an interesting subject to reflect on once you enter the delicate and sensitive dimension of the unknown. I constantly find myself writing about it, perhaps in the hope that I’ll come to a conclusion, or perhaps because I just like to dabble in the abstract. I know that I deal with it in an astonishing way, in a cocktail of unrestrained fascination and unreasoning fear. We have to deconstruct! Actors on stage for the first time are often told to ‘imagine everyone naked’. Creating ridiculous or amusing images of what haunts us tends to help us digest the subject. Well, let’s begin.

The conversation between Braun and Phillip is nothing less than the constant internal discussion between the two teddy bears that run the specific area of our brain responsible for processing the verb to act and its nuances. One is called Comfort and the other Adventure.

Comfort is terrible. He has a yellowish tone, a triangular head with rounded angles and a body so circular that you can hardly see his arms and narrow legs. He wears impeccable red boots that never seem to wear out. He is very perceptive at collecting and listing all the things and little things that can go wrong as soon as a foot leaves his bubble. The list tends to grow out of control as I think harder about leaving. It’s dual and brutally inflexible, categorising everything inside the bubble as good and everything outside as horrible. He believes that reason belongs to him. It’s got worse since Childhood decided to leave.

Adventure is a docile and shy giant. Lilac in colour. She has a very broad back and jelly-like arms and legs. Where you’d expect to see a neck, there’s a big, friendly head. A dark green crayon tattoo is above its tail. Unlike Comfort, it doesn’t live by Murphynian realism but by dreams and feeds on what we don’t yet know with a pinch of hearsay. When Childhood was still around, Adventure’s days were spent in a large field of short grass where, lying down, she would look up at the sky. She would see disconnected images of her fertile and colourful imagination in the clouds. One of its peculiar aspects is that it varies in size over time, and can both grow and shrink. Some say that it decreases in size as we get older, but that’s not a given fact. A few years ago, a group of scientists argued that there was a direct inverse correspondence between the increase in the size of Comfort and the proportional decrease in the size of Adventure. Since it’s not a pathology for Comfort to fatten disproportionately, this premise was given no more importance than a gust of wind in the middle of a storm.

Comfort is about the self, all of it. After all, it’s a list of all the things that hold me here and all the fears that will haunt me if I decide to leave. But Adventure is about the future. It’s the desire to find part of the fruit of imagination on one end, complemented by another part of an unimaginable reality on the other. In short, it’s the hope of finding a better version of myself on the other side. That’s why I fear the day when I stop watching Adventure on the grass.
It’s the delicate balance between Comfort and Adventure that makes the unknown such an appealing temptation, and it’s such a feeling of freedom that its absence is a sign that youth has passed me by and that I now remain stiff and old in a body that has only just been born.
Recently, I felt this, every word, and it scared me. In the past year, I’ve seen Comfort tuck me in and put me to sleep. I’ve seen it switch on autopilot and lead me through a sea of constancy and regularity filled only with certainties. I got scared. I don’t want them.

Having certainties is half the battle to stop asking questions, and having only certainties is a sign that we stopped asking them a long time ago. Feeling that I’ll never know everything is comfort and the search is purpose. And knowledge doesn’t just come from books and school lessons. It’s also experience. Touching the cold waters of the Atlantic and the warmer waters of the Mediterranean. Feeling the strength of the northern winds and the breezes from the south. As a child, when my alphabet had more than 26 letters and I could hardly express myself in words, I spent my days on a square of dirt three metres wide in the shade of a large magnory tree*. This space was one of the great teachers of my life. Sometimes I forget… so I packed my suitcase.
These are thoughts of solitude. I have them with me and the decision to leave is invariably selfish but necessary. After all, how can I give the best of myself to those around me, who deserve everything, if I’ve retreated into a warm, dark corner and stayed there, pale. I have nothing more to add.
This is not, however, an attack on Comfort, only on its nosy tendency to grow and suffocate. But when we go, when we set off into the unknown, depending on something beyond us, and we put a lot of the decision making down to chance and the incomprehensible and incontestable laws of the Universe, our bubble becomes everything. It’s home.

On the road, the little we have is our comfort, and so this little says a lot about each person. In ‘Tao of Travel’, Paul Theraux compiles a list of the travellers he most esteems and their luggage; their bubbles of comfort. Some carry books, others amulets. There are also cases of tools and/or a few pocket knives. About Graham Greene, on his journey through Liberia in 1935, he writes:

“They have twenty-six poorly paid African porters to carry the food and equipment. They have a pistol, they have a tent (which will never be used), they have a table, a portable toilet and a supply of whisky.”
